Mentality of students towards teachers in the
school days & in college/university days
What is a teacher? Literally anyone who teaches us is a teacher.
Our parents are the first teachers, academic teachers and society
come afterwards. Sometimes we ourselves serve as the core for inspiration
and self-judgement. We learn from our mistakes. In these all situations,
self-conscience teaches us. Thus we are also our teacher.
Talking strictly to academic teaching; the perception of
students towards their teachers in the succeeding ladders of the academic
carrier remains more or less same. There is no huge difference between the
perception of students towards teachers in school days and in
university/college days. In school days, everyone is taught about the moral
values, curtsies and punctuality. But still a difference in the mentality and
behavior is common among students. We all are taught to respect our parents,
teachers and elders. We are not mature enough to
decide our right or wrong. We simply follow
whatever said. There are also some other factors which generate respect towards
teachers; they are in fear of being bitten, love and parental behavior of
teachers. But it is to be noted that even in the school days not all the
teachers get love and affection from the student side. Every student has some
favorite or ideal teachers which he /she decides based on their own set
criteria (eg : caring,
marks giver).With gradual
advancement in classes and ages; the behavior of students also changes. It may attribute to hormonal changes. One thing to be noticed is that the
girl mentality/behavior towards teachers remains more or less invariable
with time. They don't use abusive words for them. It may be due to the society
effect. Our society is male oriented and females are considered to be quite and
gentle creatures. I know sometimes the situation becomes upside down. There
comes a stage in the school days when students start judging their
teachers by the way they teaches and behaves. The student starts nomenclature of the teachers based on their attitudes and
attributes. They make fun of their
teachers, throw chalk pieces on them, cartoon them and many other funny acts. Only a few
teachers remain untouched or soft-touched by these disrespectful acts of
students. They are often called as ideal teacher. At school days; framing the features which make a teacher
ideal is a daunting task. For some students; teacher who gives more marks and
behave friendly is ideal. For others; teacher who teaches well and is strict is
ideal. It too depends on the mentality and behavior of students. At the junction of school/college and university
days there comes a stage at which student starts making their own decision. They start discussing their problems with
their friends. Their communication with parents and teachers also becomes
seldom. Now they only consult them for their important decisions only. This may
also be attributed to hormonal changes and developmental process or so called
social impact. Finally, they enter into the process of advanced maturation.
Then comes; the university life of a student. Armoured with
developing maturity, judgement capacity and emotions; the students perceive
teachers somewhat differently. But the difference is
not acute because it's just like school days where only some of the students
behave differently. The maturity enables students to judge their teachers based
on different criteria. There are some extreme cases also in which a student fell
in love with his/her teacher or vice-versa and marries him/her. Some guys
perceive their teachers as handsome or beautiful looking persons. They are
impressed by their teachers (professors) personality. Some students respect their teacher (few of
the teachers) like their parents; obviously those are the most caring ones.
Based on a short survey, I concluded the following facts.
There are 3 types opinion from the student side:-
1)
There is no difference
between the teachers in the school and university.
They are the one who is adjustable with the situations. They
have faith in themselves. Even if some teachers do not teach well or bunks the
class they read the subject them self.
They believe that aging is the cause of lowering of activeness of professors
and they don’t blame them for their inactive involvement of professors in
class. They appreciate their teachers. They are the one who is a source of
encouragement for good teachers. They are also responsible for creating an
irresponsible stream of teachers. Some professors who take teaching as time
pass and boring work are encouraged by them and they continue their negligence
towards teaching. These professors and students are responsible for creating
other two categories of opinion.
2) Teachers
in the school days are comparatively better than university professors. They are the one who came to this conclusion
after seeing the irresponsible behavior of some teachers. Some professors are
not well versed with the subject matter, they are teaching. The matured brain
of the students does not take it easy. Some teachers come to class speak few
words, upload the (copy paste made) slides and the class is over. This weakens
the faith of students in teacher. These students do the same thing as in school
days; i.e. the nomenclature
of teachers. But this time they also consider the specific style of teachers
while naming. They sometimes disrespect teachers and use abusive language for
their teachers at their back and even in front.
3) Teachers in university are less capable to handle students and they
do not fulfil the required standards of teaching. This group includes mostly those students who are relax-minded and don’t take the study seriously. It is astonishing to note that some
of the genius students also fall in this category. In case of genius (not a
book worm parrot) students; they do not blame professors rather they blame the
system for recruiting such teachers. They are not satisfied with the system.
They love bunking classes and are crazy about the teachers who are also good atbunking.
Let me brief: - There is a little difference between teachers in
school and in university. It is the maturity level of the student which
matters. At school level also, we students have some favorite teachers with whom we interact freely. Same
is the condition at the university level. Every workplace has some loopholes,
but still the system runs. It depends how the people affected by these loop
holes react. This can be compared to our political system. If students want a
change they can. But one thing is clear; good teachers always hold the crown of respect from students. They are always welcomed and loved by both
genius & idiot students. It is because the conditions for being a good teacher undergo a little change during
the shift from school to university life.Students want their teachers to be (preference wise):-
Good at teaching
Friendly
Caring/one who can understand them
Indeed, I took greater care not to disrespect the TEACHING
COMMUNITY but I may have failed somewhere while explaining the truth. I am
extremely sorry, if it hurts someone.
